Welcome to Belong to Where You Are ✨

Honest stories and practical guidance for women who want to travel solo, start over, and build a life that feels like their own.

At 40, the life I thought I’d have for good ended in a divorce I never saw coming.

I had a choice. I could shrink and wait for life to feel safe again, or I could figure out who I was when no one else was deciding for me. I chose the second option, and solo travel became the way I did it.

Since then I’ve traveled to more than 15 countries and 44 U.S. states, mostly on my own. I’ve lived and worked remotely for long stretches in Portugal, Spain, Costa Rica, Panama, and Germany while running my marketing consultancy and working in various corporate roles. Somewhere along the way I learned the lesson this publication is named for: you don’t have to wait until you’ve “arrived” to feel at home. You can belong to where you are, wherever that is.

Hi, I’m Megan 👋

I’m a solo traveler, a marketing strategist with 18+ years in the industry, a university adjunct professor, and a writer working on a book with the same name as this publication. I’m also the founder of the Solo Travel Sisterhood, a free community for women who want to travel solo but need a little courage to take the leap.

I don’t live a traditional life, and I’ve stopped apologizing for it.

What you’ll find here

Stories from the road. These are the real ones: the lonely nights, the wrong turns, the strangers who became friends, and the moments when I felt more like myself than I had in years.

Practical solo travel guidance. How to choose your first destination, plan a trip that feels safe, travel on a real budget, and handle the “Are you sure you should go alone?” conversations.

The non-traditional life. Working remotely from abroad, relocating, managing a business across time zones, and what it’s actually like to build a life that doesn’t follow the usual script, including the parts no one posts about.

Starting over. Rebuilding your identity, your confidence, and your idea of home after life takes an unexpected turn.

Behind the scenes of the book and the podcast. Early drafts, reflections, and first access to episodes of The Belong to Where You Are Podcast, launching October 2026.

This is for you if…

  • You feel the pull to go somewhere alone but haven’t gone yet

  • You’re newly single, starting over, or ready to prove something to yourself

  • You’re already traveling solo and want a community of women who understand

  • You’re curious about living abroad, working remotely, or designing a less conventional life

  • You want honesty, not a highlight reel

Why subscribe?

The hardest part of solo travel isn’t the flight. It’s deciding you’re allowed to go.

Most travel content shows you the destination. This publication covers what comes before and after: the fear, the planning, the self-doubt, and the quiet confidence that grows when you realize you can handle more than you thought. Subscribe, and you’ll get honest essays and practical guidance in your inbox weekly. It’s written by someone who started her solo journey in the middle of her own reinvention, not at the beginning of an easy life.

If you’ve ever thought “I wish I could do that,” this is where you start.
